FLASHBACK INTERVIEW

Give us a brief history of 'The Flashback Project'
The concept behind forming The Flashback Project in 2006, was simply to bring the ‘rave’ vibe back into the breaks scene. At the time there were only a handful of underground artists making the more rave-based breakbeat tracks, so we naturally slotted into that niche, making predominantly piano-based 140-145bpm rave breakbeat. We signed tracks to Mertwax, Tornado Records, Junki Munki Records, Uppacutz and Ravebreakz, before being picked up by Slipmatt & Billy Bunter’s imprint Can You Feel It Media, with our track ‘Ease The Pressure’ (with Angie Brown). This track enjoyed success in the digital download charts and featured on many albums as it was licensed to the Ministry Of Sound and a host of other labels. As the new ‘ravebreakz‘ scene was developing, DJ Kutski at BBC Radio 1 started to represent the sound which led to us receiving consistent BBC airplay and coverage. More recently we have stepped back into the 140bpm bass-driven jungle arena with releases on Firewall Records, Uplifting Rhythm and at the end of 2011 have had our first release on Downbeat Productions. As 2012 continues we are concentrating 100% on releasing with Downbeat and have lots in store for you...watch this space!

What was your first tune to be released?
Our first release was a white label promo in 2007 on Mertwax - a track called ‘Hands In The Air’ with Stu & Nee.
Why breaks and what got you guys into it?
Breakbeat has been a big influence for us since the early ‘90s so it was only natural to gravitate to the breaks scene..

What equipment do you use to produce and what is your favorite piece of studio gear?
Software-wise, Massive and Sylenth seem to be popular and hardware-wise, The AKAI APC40 is always good for experimenting with ideas in Ableton

How do you work when creating a new tune or a remix?
Initially we use a combination of Logic and Ableton to generate ideas for the track (samples, rhythms, beats, bass etc.), before completing and polishing the track with our Flashback Project engineer of choice.

Star Wars or Star Trek?
Star Wars definitely. Never really got into Star Trek..!

What do you listen to other than breaks?
We have a very wide taste in music. The Beatles, Bob Marley and Pink Floyd are all inspirational, although we love everything from The Smiths, old school hip hop and reggae to classical music.

What do you do to pass the time when you're not producing music?
Playing shows in the UK and abroad, looking after my other half and keeping a watchful eye on my two cats seems to take up most of my time when not producing music!
What do you think of the current state of 140 breaks worldwide and where do you see it in the future?
To be honest I think that it’s a really exciting time at the moment. It’s good that 140bpm breaks and the ‘rave’ angle has got some recognition within the mainstream breaks scene, although respect has got to be paid to innovators like Mechanoise, Ctrl Z, and many other DJs/producers/labels in the UK, Europe and across the world who championed the original ‘tear-out’ breaks sound, without whom there wouldn’t be much of a 140 bass-driven jungle scene at the moment! I think that the scene can only get bigger and stronger as it and evolves - with the growing amount of talented producers making fantastic music there’s plenty of excitement to come I’m sure..

On your newest single, we see vocalist Dennean feat. on both tracks. How did you two hook up?
Dennean has been friends for many years and as we have used her vocals on past productions it made sense to use her again. Her vocals set the mood perfectly on any track and we will be working together on future tracks and our live P.A.

Cats or Dogs?
Cats for sure - Not had much experience with dogs but have had cats all my life and currently have 2 beautiful white Rescue Cats sharing my world..
Are you scared of Zombies?
Very! Not forgetting other supernatural chancers..

What was the most interesting gig you've ever played?
Innovation in Zurich, Switzerland with Micky Finn & the crew was definitely a memorable night - A sell-out event in Zurich with thousands of party people going mad to the sounds Drum n Bass and Old Skool Hardcore - mental!

Give us some insight on future releases and gigs.
There a few UK shows planned in the next couple of months along with dates in Poland and Romania being confirmed. Release-wise we have a track featured on the forthcoming Downbeat Allstars Album (DBP050), and further releases planned on Downbeat throughout the year.

He may only be 18, but Toronto Is Broken (Christian Hoffmann) is already making his mark bass music scene. Hailing from Barwell, Leicestershire, a village known as the manufacturing home of Noble cars and Hornby train sets, Toronto Is Broken already runs his own non-profit record label, Dual Signal Records, has played abroad and received BBC 1xtra support for his track "Into My Eyes".
It’s clear Christian is keen not to be pigeon holed into one genre as this EP clearly shows. Spanning across Future Jungle, Drum & Bass and Dubstep Toronto Is Broken shows us he’s clearly in the run for one to watch in 2012.
Heading up the EP is the fiercely energetic ‘Taking Over’ with its complex beats, uplifting pianos and deadly dubstepesque bass lines – peak time all the way!
Stepping up next is a no holds barred DnB track ‘Cold Contact’; a cross between DJ Fresh & Sub Focus with sweet leads and devastating bass drops.
‘Move It’ can only be described as the most disgusting Dubstep riddim you ever heard, seriously this has to be played to be believed!
Getting a 2012 maker over is TiB’s ‘Spirit Song 2012’ with its haunting vocals that can be likened to The Prodigy’s ‘Smack My Bitch Up’, beautifully dangerous.

London based rude boys, the Radiokillaz, have being churning out their own unique style of in-your-face, cutting edge dance music for some time now. Their twisted basslines bridge the gap between underground dub-step, dirty electro and tear-out breaks and I suspect this is what caught the ears of Annie Nightingale, Rob Da Bank and Eddie Temple-Morris who have been supporting them in a big way over the last few years.
Stepping into the realms of Future Jungle came naturally for them as the Jungle scene had played a big part in their youth, and fusing this with the already unique and rock-solid Radiokillaz sound has provided a deadly concoction for their debut release on Warehouse Wax, for which they have delivered four dance floor bombs of epic proportions.
The entire EP is peppered with heavily chopped amen breaks and lots of cheeky vocal samples. The title track combines lush pads with early rave style bleeps and a skanking reggae rydim, before kicking your arse with the kind of b-line that these boys are renowned for. “Pull It Up” is the epitome of PHATNESS, incorporating more filthy basslines and even more of an old-skool rave element that includes a piano lick reminiscent of the hazy days of 1989. “The Cholo” is a real groover with a pulsing bassline and the obligatory hoover stabs and “That's The Bad Guy” simply has to be heard to be believed with its stomach churning sub bass, super-phat breakbeats and another helping of hoovers to take you back to that muddy field in 1992.
This is the first release on Warehouse Wax by the hugely talented and forward thinking production team, the Radiokillaz… But rest assured, it will not be the last…

Why Future Jungle is destined for greatness

As some readers of this blog may know, my name is Tariq, I host a weekly online radio show called 'tea with Tariq' for www.radioy.co.uk, a youth station aimed at 16-24yr olds. I've been a follower of the rave scene since 1991 up until 2001 when I got a bit fed up of music in general. When I got into radio recently I started looking for music to play and my natural inclination towards the old skool rave sound led me to stumble across the Future Rave anthems compilations and the 'Rave breaks' sound, I kept googling away to find more material and came across nu-rave.com where the current styles had been categorised into rave breaks, hardcore breaks and J Tek. I eventually came across http://www.topdrawerdigital.com/ where I heard a track called 'Autumn Star' by D Con & Miguel which reminded me of the 1992 Jungle tekno sound and I knew I had found the sound I was looking for to promote on a radio program.

Around about the same time, another style emerged reffered to as '140 Jungle' or 'Future Jungle' , whilst admittedly name tags are undoubtedly problematic for producers as it can marginalise and pigeonhole them. I personally feel that this strand of modern rave music is the closest in spirit to the early 90's sound, not only that but it fuses the earlier sound with the mid 90's 'Jungle/Drum n Bass' and the current 'Dubstep'. No wonder then that dubstep producers are themselves getting involved with some notably fine results many of which you can check out on this blog.

Going back to the old skool thing for a second, when rave/hardcore broke out in the early 90's, it didn't just break out, it made an impact on mainstream radio although I'm sure the men in suits didn't like it and mainstream radio did everything it could to bury it until sadly, they won and by 1993, DJs like Pete Tong who dedicated half an hour of his show to hardcore every week stopped playing it. Future jungle or whichever term you prefer will break out and impact mainstream radio, there have already been tracks played on BBC radio 1, artists like Lucas, Bojcot selectah, Radiokillaz and DJ Twista's remix of the classic 'Crowd control' by Ramos & Supreme have all had airtime on the beeb. 20 years ago, the radio wasn't ready for hardcore but it will be ready for this fresh new re-interpretation and for me, that is an exciting prospect as it will allow a whole new generation to discover the sound, maybe I'm being very optimistic but the signs are there. Hi Shakes. You've been picking up plaudits from some big breakbeat players for your new single, including the likes of Rennie Pilgrem and Left/Right in the US. What is it about Gangbusters that makes it stand out from your previous work, do you think?

I think it's the track where all of the little essentials have started to click: writing in key, composition, mixdown. While I was making this one I learned a bit of music theory so synth lines were easier to program and everything fits properly. It ended up more tearout than I intended, but the squeeling bass line gives it that raw energy that sends people crazy. A few amen edits and air-horn samples and everyone's happy! I've still got more to learn through experience and, like most people, I'm even more excited about the tracks that are yet to be released.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself? What are you doing when you're not in the studio?

Haha, when am I ever in the studio? I'm a London, UK-based teacher, so the day job and education of today's youth has to be put first and the production work tends to wait for the holidays. I enjoy cooking, climbing, disc golf (google it), Studio Ghibli fims, long walks on the beach and a GSOH (ooops wrong site).

Who are your main influences in dance music and how have they affected your sound?

I admire the dubstep producers like Skrillex and SKisM (shout to NSD) who have brought musicality and melodies to their scene to accompany the incredible noises, but if they had influenced me I guess I'd have tried emulating elements of their music and I wouldn't know where to begin. Like a lot of people that started on the future jungle thing I guess it was RackNRuin and Skream that were the only references when I began making Gangbusters. There's a lot more out there now and I'm stuck a little between two main branches of the sound. I'm peeling away some of the noisy midrange and trying to find the right balance of the smooth bass and tight, clear high end of RackNRuin and the energetic, but less crisp, sounds of Pyramid. Both have it spot on, but in different ways, and there are limits to having the best of both worlds.

The future jungle vibe is starting to reach some sort of maturity. How do you think it will change over the next couple of years and who are your favourite artists pushing this sound?

It is great to see the old breaks back, but it will evolve quickly until they eventually disappear for the next generation to rediscover. The limited break samples that fit the style mean that we are already seeing the wiser people develop their own sound and not get caught up with simply using an amen. Pyramid and others are beefing up their beats and taking us to a faster and more polished version of the old tearout sounds in many ways. Some people are managing to create a jungle feel without the original samples and others are taking influence from future garage, dancehall, soca etc. which is great.

The people that have got it right for me this year in the breaks scene are 601, Yoof, Schema, Jurassik and (as if I haven't mentioned them enough) Pyramid. There aren't many labels that can be relied upon to bring this sound at a high quality, but there's stuff coming from every corner. It's interesting searching round and finding tracks mis-labelled as drum & bass on beatport by people who just happen to dabble in their version of the sound, e.g. Redlight, Warrior One, Herve, Submerse, DJ Fresh, Rusko, Baxta, Skream, Chase & Status etc.

What's up next for Shakes? Any grand ambitions?

I really want find the right person to do a vocal collab with by next year. I've got a remix I need to get done for someone I'm quite a fan of and more Supatronix remix work, including my first official dubstep tune. There's a couple of deep, but very different originals I love and am just trying to work out the best way to release. Unfinished stuff includes some collaborations with Mr Jurassik and a new 'post-dubstep' stripped down project that will hopefully turn into an EP under a different name next year.

Tune of the Day: Schema - Move - Subslayers

Bringing a slightly new sound to the subslayers imprint from their first release back in 2010. Schema step up to the jungle breaks sound but retaining some of their dubstep flavours. Move is easily the stand out track from the ep which has quite a lot of trancey bleepy synthness running through it alongside the usual dirty bass dubstep wonk and amens a pleanty.
It will be interesting to see where subslayers takes us next on an already awesome journey.

In the first of a series of interviews Kidchameleon talks to some of new and old hands of the 140 scene. Kicking things off with deep dub jungle master Pressa!

1. Hi Joe thanks for taking some time to do this interview with us. for those wh have yet to come across you can you give a bit of history about Pressa.

I'm a music producer and DJ from south east London/north west Kent that makes (sub) bass heavy music usually at 140 beats per minute which tends to be in the styles of dubstep or 140/future jungle.

I started off as just a dj playing garage and then drum n bass. I later decided that I wanted to learn how to produce and tried my hand at making a dnb tune. I wasn't very good with the 170 bpm tempo so made some stuff at 140 and it was a lot better straight away. At the time I thought what I was making was jungle and dub influenced grime/sublow. I later heard some dubstep and it was the closest thing to what I was making so I looked in to it more and got more involved with the scene.

In recent times I've been more known as a deep dubstep producer but have been focusing on the straight up 140 jungle stuff more recently.

2. Your sound is quite a deep melodic dubby sound, which few people are doing at the moment, were you always more into the deep end than the amen led stuff?

I've always been in to vibes and bass weight, if music hasn't got that in I don't see the point really! But yeah my music has always been pretty much on the deeper side of the music spectrum, easy on the ear kind of stuff.
As for amen breaks, I stay clear quite a bit because so many producers use them a lot. I do use them some times but more as an under layer.

3.You have just had an awesome release on Top Drawer Digital, alongside dutch junglist Bojcot. What was the idea behid this project and will we be seeing you two teaming up again?

Thanks. Lucas approached us to see if we were interested in doing a remix EP for the label, so me and Bojcot spoke about it and decided to go ahead with it.

There wasn't really an idea behind the project other than we would remix each others track, "Fast Motion 11" is called 11 and not "Fast Motion 10" remix as we decided it sounded too different from the original.

Me and Bojcot Selectah have been sending each other beats for around 3 years now as we both make jungle flavoured dubstep and more straight forward jungle at 140 bpm (not much was being made back then). We will definitely be working on something in the future!

4. What software/hardware do you use, to create the warmth of tracks like lost in time.

I use Reason, Recycle and a whole mess of samples to create my sound.

5. Where you do draw you influences from outside of jungle?
Dub, house, garage, oldskool hardcore, dnb, minimal techno, film soundtracks and day to day life experiences are probably my main influences.

6. How do you feel about the whole "future" term being used? It seems to be quite a hot topic in terms of branding music these days.

I think it's ok if the music is forward thinking, using new sounds and techniques I suppose. It does get used a lot.

To be honest I haven't really been following the future jungle sound till recently as I was just doing my own thing. I need to get at more producers for tunes haha.

7. Who will you be watching out for this coming year?

I'm sure Bojcot Selectah is building some heavy tunes at the moment so I'm gonna keep an eye out for him, oh and Graish as well as the Top Drawer Digital lot.
