Austin & Vinyl Junkie Ft Rachel Wallace -Can't Hold Back-Warehouse Wax +Exclusive Interviews With Vinyl JUnkie & Rachel Wallace

VINYL JUNKIE INTERVIEW FOR FUTURE JUNGLE BLOG
For anyone who has been living in a cave for the last three decades, could you briefly tell us a bit about yourself?

Started DJing in 1991. Played at the first Tribal Gathering, main arena 1993. Started Producing in around 1995. Started Warehouse Wax in 2003… For more info see my website: www.djvinyljunkie.com

Your roots are in the rave scene of the early 90s, long after the supposed demise of this scene, you formed Warehouse Wax in 2003, the first release by yourself and Darkus was a full on 150BPM hardcore tune that sounded like it came straight out of 1992. What was the reaction at the time to the label and this first tune?

At first it was really only the Old Skool crowd from the B2VOS website that really knew about it. They all loved it and it sparked something off and lots of labels started to emerge soon after that. Sales wise, it was a gradual thing. Sales were really slow at first but then picked up and we ended up getting rid of the first batch and doing a repress.

Fast forward to the present and the label is now known for supporting the 140/Future Jungle sound, comparatively speaking, how does the 140 sound stand up to the much loved Old Skool?

Well. I love the Oldskool as you know…. But I love the new stuff equally. The production has moved on massively but the vibe is different now. There was just something really raw about the music back then and as the music has evolved and the production got better, that raw edge has kind of been lost. But I think in this day and age, the standard of the production has to be of a certain level and that’s not a bad thing.

Your new release is out now, it’s a who’s who of old skool legends with Austin & Rachel Wallace on board, the video has reached over 3500 views on you tube, we understand it was a labour of love for you, how did it all come about?

LOL. Yeah… Well I’ve been working with Austin on and off for about 17 years so we basically just got in the studio one day and made a rough backing track. I vaguely knew Rachel as my mate Sike had done a track with her a few years previous, which ended up being released on Warehouse Wax. We sent her the track and she liked it. She wrote the lyrics and recorded the vocal and sent it to us. Me and Austin both loved it. It was originally just something we done for a Live PA that we were booked for at Fantazia in Bristol but everyone loved it and lots of people were saying to us that we should release it… So we did! It took almost a year to sort everything out but we got there in the end. And yes, it was definitely a labour of love…

So, do you think you will be doing more videos in the future?

To be honest, I really enjoyed doing the video and yes I think we will be doing more. It was a lot of fun and I think I have got the bug for it now…

Lastly, any final words and shout outs?

I’m not going to name anyone in particular because I always forget somebody. But would just like to send out a massive thank you to absolutely everyone that has helped out and got behind us with promoting this release. I am quite overwhelmed and humbled to be honest… The amount of support that it has been getting is amazing and I really appreciate everybody’s help. Of course a massive big up to all the remixers involved as well. THANK YOU! x

RACHEL WALLACE INTERVIEW
Thanks for taking time to have a chat with the blog, as a brief intro, tell us a bit about your self
Well I started making music when I was around 14years old, singing vocals in a r&b band called Kreuz...after a few years with the group i left then started singing with Sub Base records...
I then moved to Germany and recorded a lot of techno/dance music...

I then joined Stereo Mc's and have been working with them for the last 7 years...in between touring, recording tracks for the some of the artists you named and others, at present I'm working on a album with various other artists including Joe nebula and the love2love Soulsystem from Basel, Switzerland...

Most of us know you from the 2 massive tracks on the seminal Suburban Base, ‘Tell Me Why’ & ‘I Feel This Way’, how did you link up with the people at Suburban Base?

I was at my first rave In lea Valley...dancing on the stage, like you do!! and I bumped into Dan Donnelly on the stage and he said that's one of his tracks they were playing and I think I said I'm a singer...and there you go...that's how it all started!!

You have an amazing voice, what inspired to embark on a singing career?

Thank you!!! I've always loved music and singing since I can remember! I've been immersed in all different types of music since i was very young. My dad was a keyboard player for Marcia Griffiths and various other bands and my uncle's too, so I've been going to festivals, gigs ect since I was 12!

Recently you have appeared on tracks for 100Me and 2 Vinyl Junkie tracks including the current release ‘Can’t Hold Back’ where you also appear in the highly popular you tube video, how did you get involved with this tune?

I'm very open to all kinds of music, if someone sends me a track and I get a vibe then usually I will record some vocals, and this is how it worked out with the 100me guys.  With Johnny it was kind of similar but I already knew Austin really well from the Sub base days as he was the in-house sound engineer!

What do you make of the current 140/Future Jungle Sound?

I'll be honest with you, there are so many different styles and types of music about, if I feel it then I like it, it's really that simple. I've just spent 2 days at Notting Hill carnival listening to all different sound systems.. But I always ended up at Aba-Shanti-I, this type of dub music takes you to another level! When you’re just open to music it will touch you and that's music to me!!

Thanks for taking the time once again, any big ups/shouts outs to wrap things up?

I would like to say a big shout out to all who have supported and helped with the release of this track...and to all music lovers...

Peace & luv, Rach

Sound Shifter - Nu-Blood Ezra-

I feel rather embarrassed that I have slept on this a bit, partly due to being off the radio for 7 weeks, its high time I featured this on the blog, the first ever Future Jungle tune to be signed to Marvelous Cain's Yardrock label, Sound Shifter brings the 94 vibes to this ragga style FJ bad boy, we're in for some euphoric choppage action here, loads of great vox and heavy sub bass, just what we like, go and buy a copy of this sick tune, a definite 10/10 from one of our favourite producers....

Kemikal Breakfazt - Green Valley / Dimensional Breakdown -Rinse Repeat Recordings

Its always great to hear some fresh Rave Breaks and this 2 tracker will definitely please your piano lovin sensibilities. 'Green Valley' has a huge old skool/Italo House/Happy Hardcore piano riff to get you rushing even if you are totally sober, works for me in a complete state of clarity, I can tell you that!!! Combined with some tough breaks and more 95 Hardcore style pads, this ones a winner!!!

'Dimensional Breakdown' is excellent too, starting off fairly minimal with some light beats and hoover snippets before unleashing some truly epic piano, bit of a 94 Ramos & Supreme vibe in a 2013 140BPM style.

2 quality tracks from a fresh producer on a label that continues to shine, first class high grade bangers!!!

Sound Shifter Ft Refold-Earth EP-Digital Acetate

2 amazing tunes from Sound Shifter & Refold here, invoking memories of the 93/94 Jungle sound brought up to date in 2013. 'An Ocean Journey' builds slowly and calmly with subtle pads and beats into a superb slice of classic intelligent Jungle with strings along a similar line to favourites like 'Atlantis' & 'Music' while remaining a unique and fresh take on the 93/94 style.

Sound Shifter & Refold - An Ocean Journey (Out Now) by Sound Shifter

'Sunset Whispers' is sweet, vocal Balearic bliss wrapped in a breakbeat, pads that soothe the soul and ease the mind, Sound Shifter is on fire right now with this fine new EP on Digital Acetate, an EP out on Yardrock for the Jungle Crew and an amazing remix of Disrupta's 'Givin It All I Got' coming very soon on Kode 5. This EP gets a 10/10 from the blog and a deserving one, go and support it, buy, share the links to buy and give quality music a chance to shine.

Radioactive Watermelon-Alpha/Blunted Purpose-Good News Boppers

Radioactive Watermelon returns to Good News Boppers with 2 mind blowingly good 140 rollers. Taking us on a journey, first up with 'Alpha' opening with an epic intro, the track builds and builds with subtle layers of warm pads and gradually increasing drum patterns. A deep and melodic number that offers a fresh take on the 140 sound swapping the big booming basslines for intricate and musical sounds. 'Blunted Purpose' has a definite feel of Bukem's 'Demons Theme' with Jazzy pads and organs over a classic 140BPM old skool style break. 2 essential tunes to add to your collection and brighten up this Monday morning.

Sub Slayers 25: Toronto Is Broken 'The Outer Circle EP' by Sub Slayers

Exclusive Interview with Toronto Is Broken

Like Liam Howlett, you started making music at a very young age, what inspired you to get into the world of music production?
I come from a rock and metal background and always tried being in bands, but never really liked the whole band set-up and having to compromise all the time. Then I discovered the band Enter Shikari when I was about 14 (I’m 20 now), that opened up my eyes to electronic music. The lead singer had a solo side project know as Rout and then I realized that you didn’t have to be in a band to make music. So I got myself a copy of FL Studio 8 and it’s just grew from there.

Being a Future Jungle blog we have to ask the obligatory question, how did you come to know of the '140/Future Jungle' scene and become involved in it?
I think my first introduction to the whole thing were the two 150bpm tunes DJ Fresh’s “Future Jungle” EP. I was blown away and I’d never heard anything like it before. And before I knew it, my track “Taking Over” was born, but, I had no idea what to do with it. So I sent it to High Rankin who then forwarded it to Jay Cunning, after a few phonecalls we’d settled on releasing the “Move It” EP and the rest is history.

Who are your musical influences?
There are a lot that always shift from time to time, but right about now it’d have to be guys like Calyx & Teebee, Amon Tobin, Koven, Koan Sound, Eskmo, and Joe Ford.

What software & Hardware occupies the TIB studio?
Basically I’m running Ableton Live 7, I’m too scared to upgrade to a newer version as they changed the audio warping system, but it does everything I need to do. I also do a lot of offline processing in FL Studio 9 mainly when I’m processing some bass sounds (Vocoding, distortions), and then dropping them back into samplers in Ableton.
Plugin wise I use a lot of Massive (like everybody else), before dropping the bass sounds into samplers for further processing. The Shaack Audio transient Shaper is a God send too.
I don’t use any outboard gear but I do have a Tascam DR-55 field recorder that I use, and I recently let my 9 month old daughter loose with the pots and pans, and recorded it, which created some interesting results to say the least.

Of your own productions, which is your personal favorite to date?
Ooo, this is a tough one, as I like all of them in different ways but if I had to choose 3 it’d be these:
Ghost Network (Feat. Anodyne Industries) (Sub Slayers)
April 9th (Feat. Jenni Potts) (Supreme Hustle)
Foes (Sub Nation Dub)

And which current bangers are on repeat play on your iPod?
Two Fingers – Vengance Rhythm (Koan Sound Remix) (Ninja Tune)
Bring Me The Horizon – Antivist (Epitaph)
Wizard – Mind Control (Sub Slayers)
Joe Ford – Behemoth (Bad Taste)
Flatmate – Hot Ball (Vexisle Remix) (Caliber Music)
Anodyne Industries – Rev (Hopskotch)

What are your thoughts on the never ending vinyl vs. digital debate?
To be honest I don’t really have an opinion on this as I use Ableton when I play out. But I know it’s a lot cheaper and more cost-efficient to release digitally and not on Vinyl. Either way, if Vinyl stops being produced there’s still programs like Serato and Traktor about so you can still play out the latest tunes and mix it up with your classic vinyl collection.

Game Of Thrones or Breaking Bad?
Neither, but I’ve been watching a lot of Phoneshop recently.

You have a new EP out on Sub Slayers, can you tell us a bit about that?
Essentially it is a follow-up / sequel to “The Inner Circle” EP that came out last summer, and it’s like and album split into two sections. There are themes and musical that began in the first EP that is continued into the second EP.
There are five tracks, a robotic Drum & Bass “The Second Renaissance”, something that sounds like and end-of-the-world-death-rave that is “Extraction Point”. Followed up by a deep Drum & Bass tech-y roller collaboration with long time producer friend Anodyne Industries, and 2 future jungle tearouts “Oceans Apart” and “Voyager”

Lastly, what’s coming up in the near future tune wise, how can we stay updated with TIB and any big ups/shout outs?
I’ve just wrapped up two Neurohop tunes, “Foes  &  Get Funky” that’ll be out on Sub Nation later this year, Sub Slayers’ new sub-label.
There’s also an album in the works.

The 'Outer Circle EP' is out now on all good download stores
